Reviews of Penlanfach Farmhouse

"A fantastic cottage in beautiful surroundings. The owners are perfect hosts and are able to pass on local knowledge."

"This is a very smart and comfortable cottage, refurbished to a very high standard and well equipped, but still retaining all of the charm and idiosincrasies of the old farm. It is a in a lovely location and its grounds are enchanting and fabulous for both children and adults. Hannah, Roger and their young son are friendly and inviting hosts and could not be more helpful or accommodating. Our only quibble is that both the rental property and the owners' cottage are very close together and you cannot avoid bumping in to each other each day and occasionally getting involved in the familiy's activities. Please don't get us wrong, there are millions of other people who you would prefer not to be neighbours with, but I guess we didn't appreciate how close and intimate we would be on occasions. The proximity meant that we did not feel the grounds were ours to explore and use as freely as we might have wished (despite being told we could). Our young son enjoyed being involved in activities with the owners son (who is a lovely and well behaved young man), but as parents we felt obliged to encourage him to do so, so as not to seem rude and isolationist. I would not wish to discourage anyone from going to the cottage as it is really lovely, but if you are the sort of family that enjoys complete separation from the real world then you may not feel this here. I'd just like to say finally that this review is meant as an honest opinion of our visit. There is really absolutely nothing to complain about and our comments are genuinely not meant to be seen as criticism. It is fairly obvious from the website and photos that the owners live on site so perhaps we might be seen as hypocrites to make such comments. We had a wonderful time and our hosts were very lovely - just wished they could have been a few hundred yards away (and that's because of our frailties not theirs !)."

"Where do I begin with the praise for this cottage. Yes it was in the middle of nowhere but thanks to brilliant directions (don't follow the satnav) we found it with very little effort. The only thing I have to complain about is that we could only stay the weekend where a week would have been better. Hannah and Roger couldn't have been more helpful. Nothing seemed too much trouble. Hannah took the time to take us around the property explaining the quirks and switches of the house. Roger saved the day and let me know I had left my car lights on, the next days trip to a wedding would have been a problem. The whole house was clean and well equipped. Even when my friend said she wished she had a hot water bottle for her back ache, there was one in the cupboard! After one particularly wet walk, all items were placed around the range where they steamed nicely until they were dry. Very pleased the next day to be able to put on dry walking items. We didn't need to light the fire for warmth but couldn't resist it for the atmosphere. What made it particularly restful was Hannah's understanding of what its like to have dogs that might not be the easiest pups around. Normally, I spend a lot of my holidays making sure that the dogs are not upsetting people and so don't get the rest I need. Because of her understanding I felt confident that no situation would arise where I would have to leap up and herd the dogs in to another room away from someone knocking on the door and just entering. There was also a fantastic system of Buddha and Grommit statues on the kitchen windowsill letting everyone know when the dogs were down the lane having a walk so any clashes between house dogs and visiting dogs were avoided completely. I normally sleep very badly but this cottage was so quiet at night that I snored the night away. Birdsong for an alarm clock. No problems with that. My advice to anyone thinking of booking this cottage - leave the world behind and spend some time just relaxing. Yes, you can use your mobile if you walk around a bit, the garden had a bit more signal, but this is what you should expect in the depths of Wales. The lack of signal is not particular to this cottage. There is a television and hundreds of DVDs to pick from but mostly, we sat quietly reading or sleeping and forgetting the madness of work -. I can imagine that for some, especially children, used to being glued to the box or the internet it would be a trauma, but to be honest, if that is what you want from a holiday, go to Butlins."

If you want to get away from it all and don't mind not having a mobile signal (which we were really happy about) then this is the place for you. The surrounding area of the cottage is perfect if you like space and peace and quiet. A place to re-charge your batteries - just remember to buy in food and wine in as the local shops are not just around the corner. The local butchers in the village Crymych supply fantastic local meat, well worth a visit. One of the best holidays we have been on. Lovely - a real get away. I wish we had booked two weeks.
