Schoolhouse Cottage in Ardgay

Welcome to Schoolhouse Cottage. School House Cottage was originally the schoolmaster’s house which forms part of the historic Larachan House. It was built as the village school for the small hamlet of Spinningdale, donated by the famous American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, who lived for a while in the area. Adjoining the owners’ home, this lovely sandstone, Victorian cottage has been modernised to provide a very good standard of accommodation in a lovely rural setting. It occupies 2 acres of open garden grounds overlooking the spectacular waters of the Dornoch Firth. The original school door opens into the hallway, and a further door leads through to the beautiful pine panelled living room, which was originally the Headmaster’s sitting room and study. A welcoming wood burner adds to the warmth and ambience, and the bright, modern kitchen/dining room is very well-equipped. There is a bathroom on the ground floor, and an original staircase leads up to two pretty bedrooms, both very attractively furnished with colour co-ordinated soft furnishings. There is a second large family bathroom and a separate shower room on this floor. Visitors have their own courtyard area adjacent to the cottage with outdoor dining table and chairs. The large garden grounds are mainly laid to lawn and afford superb views across the water. The area is a haven for wildlife and deer are frequently seen in the gardens, whilst rare osprey and red kite are spotted in the vicinity. Seals bask on the sandbanks in the firth. The nearby villages of Dornoch, Tain and Bonar Bridge provide a good selection of local amenities, with shops, supermarkets, pubs, cafés and restaurants. Miles of golden sandy beaches are found all along this coast and Inverness, with all its attractions, is a 40-minute drive. The cottage is situated on the renowned North Coast 500 route, which passes through some of finest scenic areas to be found anywhere on the British Isles. Golf, fishing, mountain bike trails, sailing, kayaking and hill-walking are all local pastimes. Beach 6 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 4 miles.
