The market town of Swinford in County Mayo is located on a tributary of the River Moy, well known for its fishing waters which include the lakes of Conn and Cullin, and the Callow lakes with their abundance of brown trout. Swinford is located approximately 11 miles from Knock International Airport and is well known as being home to one of Mayo's largest summer festivals which features ceilidh dancing, pageantry and heritage displays which portray the traditions of East Mayo. A nine hole golf course, pony trekking and nature walks are all on offer here, and there is a lively local nightlife in the town's pubs which feature traditional live Irish music. Walk a short distance out of the town and you'll discover archaeological sites where many artefacts have been discovered. Mayo's other visitor attractions include Ceide Fields, Croagh Patrick, and the Foxford Woollen Mills.

The West of Ireland conjures up many images; thatched, whitewashed cottages, a flock of sheep on a narrow road, an emerald green field with a stone wall, or the Atlantic waves crashing into towering cliffs and rocky shores.

Reviews of Cregan Cottage

"Needed somewhere close too this vicinity and could not have asked for more..... Easy access too many great tourist attractions eg Achill island,Croagh patrick and many more on the Wild Atlantic way.... Asked my 5 year old what was his favourite thing of the holiday and his reply was feeding Dolly and Daisy carrots(Two lovely Donkeys in the field adjoined too the cottage gardens) and making and lighting(under daddys supervision) the fire in the wood burner each evening!! A refreshing change from chips and ice cream...lol"

"This cottage in county Mayo epitomizes my childhood memories of visiting family in the Swinford area. The sturdily-built home exudes warmth and Irish charm. The fresh scones and butter waiting for us were a delight. The rooms were as pictured on the website, spacious and clean. There were two buckets next to the stove, one with wood, the other with TURF! The friendly donkey, lush green fields, and beautiful setting made this a perfect site for our family weekend rendez-vous."

"A fantastic peaceful location with outstanding amenities. Many thanks to Margaret and Brendan for their welcome - not forgetting the lovely scones/butter/milk on our arrival. We were blessed with great weather and enjoyed the planned walks around the area fron the cottage - and occasionally meeting friendly locals. Our little dog certainly liked to wander around the garden and with no passing traffic to worry about. Daisy the Donkey greeted us every morning, lunch and evening for her little treat -carrots and sometimes a nice juicy apple. Without exception Cregan Cottage catered for all our needs and was a joy to stay there for a wonderful relaxing week."

"My husband and dog stayed in Cregan Cottage earlier this month and it was a wonderful retreat. We took spare blankets to cover their couch and chairs so that little Zola (the dog) didn't leave paw prints every where and she loved it there! We felt so safe and relaxed, coming from Galway City centre it was great to be able to sit in the evening with the back door and front door open letting the dog potter around the lovely gardens to her hearts content. Daisy the donkey was great company, we fed her a carrot every day and each morning she'd potter up to the fence to greet us :o) The local shops were approx a 10 minute drive and we were within very easy reach of Castlerbar, Foxford, Westport, Ballina and the Achill Islands. The stove in the lounge helped to make our evenings very cosy and the bbq set out the back gave us additional eating options if the evenings were mild. The house was very clean, with plenty of bedding and towels. The bathroom is very new with a great power shower and the bed in the main bedroom was very comfortable with a window view over the front garden. in the morning I would read in bed and look over and see Daisy the donkey pottering in her field. We will definately go back one day, lots of fond memories are held there! Lou and Zola (and the husband)"

"Just back from a lovely break at Cregan Cottage. A beautiful little cottage in rural setting in County Mayo. It is picture postcard perfect!! Great if you want to get away from it all but love a little bit of luxury too. The cottage is beautiful with all mod cons. Totally secluded but just a short drive from some of Mayo's lovely villages and beaches. We travelled with 2 teenage boys (13, 17) and our dog. The boys were instantly smitten by the donkey at the bottom of the garden and we found plenty of activities such as surfing, swimming and tree adventures within a short drive. We had dinner and a show in Hotel Westport and ate twice in The Gateway Hotel, Swinford. Foxford Mill is well worth a visit too. The cottage is a credit to Margaret & Brendan!"
