On the borders of Derbyshire and Staffordshire, between the valleys of the Dove and the Manifold Rivers, is the charming village of Alstonefield. With real charm and character, this wonderful little settlement has won the 'Best Kept Village Award' ten times - most recently in 2005 - and was also in the final of the 'National Village of the Year' award in 1998. With a traditional country pub set just off the village green, this is a truly special holiday destination. Set in verdant green countryside, and along the course of the 'Manifold Trail' - which follows the route of the old Leek to Manifold Light Railway - this is an ideal spot for walkers or cyclists. The pretty towns of Ilam and Hartington are close by and provide a wide range of amenities such as shops and cafes, whilst further afield are the pretty market towns of Ashbourne and Leek.

The ultimate in "year-round" appeal, the Peak District offers countryside, picturesque villages and magnificent scenery. It touches upon six counties and encloses 555 square miles of open moorland, flowing rivers, and wooded dales.

Reviews of The Shires

"The location was great for us, nice quiet village with pub, lovely walks from the door. Booked this for a family break was not disappointed, great cottage with beautiful stone features. Very comfy and cosy, the Grandkids loved it, especially the spa batch, brilliant after a good walk. The cottage itself has everything you need supplied, the kitchen was not wanting for anything to prepare meals for the family. The bedrooms were nice and warm and cosy, the beds were very comfortable indeed. Lovely large dining room which seats up to 8 people, and would still not feel cramped, lovely table by the way. Nice to have off road parking as well, not always the case with village properties. Will definitely be re-booking, thanks Nick for a great stay."

"A lovely spacious, family friendly cottage in a beautiful quiet village. The cottage was brilliantly equipped and communication from the owner was excellent prior to departure. What a beautiful part of the country, would love to return!"
