Location

Idler's Cottage is a ham-stone studio-cottage that offers accommodation for up to 2 people. All the accommodation is laid-out over one level and has been decorated with taste and thought throughout. A private patio allows you to enjoy a spot of summertime dining while, in the winter months, storage heaters and a wood burning stove ensure that you can still enjoy all that the area has to offer. Although there is off-road parking for 1 car, the local shops and pubs are just a short walk from the front door. Idler's Cottage is well placed as a base from which to seek out local attractions.

South Petherton was once of great strategic importance on the Fosse Way. This compact little ham-stone town with its many small shops now has a quiet, unhurried charm. It has an old church with an octagonal central tower and the 14th Century manor house was restored in the 19th Century and nicknamed 'King Ina's Palace'. South Petherton stands where it stood a thousand years ago, taking its name from the nearby river Parrett and the Saxon word ‘ton' for settlement. Modern day Petherton is a bustling, lively centre with many shops retaining their original Edwardian and Georgian fronts and providing services to the small outlying hamlets. The basis of the community has always traditionally been agriculture, interspersed by glove making, cider production and other cottage industries. Local attractions include the Margery Fish Garden in the East Lambrook Manor Gardens, the fossilised beaches of Lyme Regis and Charmouth and the Roman city of Bath.

Somerset offers 3 areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty - the Quantock, Mendip and Blackdown Hills. Lose yourself in the glory of nature, take a ride on a steam train, visit a traditional farmers' market or explore your mystical side at Glastonbury.

Reviews of Idlers Cottage

"Lovely little bedsit style annex above owners double garage. Double doors to small private seating area. Amazing use of space inside, didn't feel small, just very cosy. You have to walk through owners back gate and along a small covered path through their beautiful garden to reach it, but they respect privacy and don't disturb you, but are there if needed. Parking is ample for one car but coming out of drive onto small narrow street can prove challenging if in anything bigger than a fiesta/punto.(we have a Peugeot 406). House opposite was having work done so had to navigate a skip and transit van as reversing out of driveway which proved tricky but I'm sure would be easier at other times. Lovely village with lovely shops, especially the bakery which helped us gain a few extra pounds. Definately avoid the co-op and get your provisions from local small shops like butcher etc as you will miss the great foods on offer. Great place, lovely accommodation and helpful owners, well worth a visit. Highly recommend."

The amenities are excellent, Anything else you may need can be obtained from the local village, which is just a few minutes walk and includes the village pub with lovely friendly staff and customers alike. It is also a superb base for exploring the surrounding areas. We thoroughly enjoyed our week stay and definitely hope to visit and stay again in the Future."

"Charming studio cottage tucked away Iin a corner of the owners lovely garden . Very private with its own small garden with seating area . Owners friendly and around if you need them but you have privacy. The village has still retained the village shops butchers , bakers, grocers, pub, florist etc which we loved just a minutes walk to the friendly village to buy everything you need. There is a small co-op but we gave all our business to the independent shops above as the village would die if the supermarket got all the business. The interior of cottage is charming and comfortable and the garden is cottage style but I would recomend higher watt bulbs as we found we had to put the lighting on all day as it was dark and that's are only negative but this can be resolved quite easily with a smaller tv and cooker as they block the light from windows. Hope this helped but should not put you off as its lovely . Great places to visit for the garden lovers and peaceful country walks to Martock . Highly recomend the small shop opposite the grocers selling handmade pastries and cakes , meats and cheeses etc also the pretty florists ( textile artist ) selling handmade gifts by her very own hand ."
