Location

The Reiver's Retreat is a neatly presented ground floor apartment in a conversion of a former draper's shop, on the main street in the heart of the popular little town of Haltwhistle. The apartment sleeps two in a double bedroom. There is also a shower room, kitchen and sitting room with dining area. The apartment retains character features including the very grand windows once afforded to the draper's shop, providing a great view of the passing hustle and bustle of this popular market town. Outside is off-road parking making The Reaver's Retreat an ideal touring base.

The small market town of Haltwhistle is a vibrant place, offering a wide range of shops and other amenities. Home to The Black Bull – a proper, old fashioned pub, serving quality food and real ale – the village is a welcoming place to return to following a day of walking, pony trekking or cycling. With the Pennine Way and other great cycle routes and Bridleways running nearby, it's easy to enjoy this stunning scenery, which boasts dramatic castles, surging rivers and beautiful forests. Those interested in the country's history are sure to enjoy a visit to one of the best preserved stretches of Hadrian's Wall, only a mile north of the village, and with an ongoing dig on the site of Vindolanda, it's easy to get in touch with the nation's past. If history isn't your cup of tea, then there is a regular train and bus service in to Newcastle and Carlisle, meaning that you can leave your car behind and enjoy the nightlife the big cities have to offer.

Northumberland is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian's Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife.

"We were very impressed with the apartment. We contacted the owner prior to arrival to organise key collection. On arrival we werent sure where we had to park so we drove through the little archway to one side and parked round the right hand side (taking care not to block the garages). The place is lovely. Wonderfully comfortable sofa and chair - who doesn't love a recliner after a hard day's walk! The bed was really comfy. I had the best sleep I have had in a long time. The only reason I didn't give it 5 was because the bedroom curtains are thin and let in so much light from both street lighting and early rising sun (4am in the height of summer!). Much as I like to get out and about, a lie in would have been lovely. Kitchen was fine for a bit of holiday catering but there were so many places in and around the town we didn't really need to cook too much, just breakfast. The bathroom opens directly into the kitchen. To be honest I loved the place so much I wish I lived there. Sainsburys is just round the back. The Black Horse pub is just over the road. Takeaway is next door. Chippie just along the way. If you are a member of a union, take your union membership card with you and you can be signed in at the Working Mans Club as a guest. They show various footie matches and on certain nights they have cheap beer! So much to see and do in the area, we will have to try and book for next year when hubby has had his holiday allocated. We managed to get to Edinburgh in a couple of hours, travelling along the A68 through Jedburgh. What a spectacular road. You have to visit Vindolanda. It is an amazing place. All in all this was a wonderful find and somewhere I would readily visit again."

"This is a great place to stay for visiting Hadrian's Wall country and further afield in Northumberland. There is a large living/dining room and all the amenities and furnishings are of a high standard. All the shops you need are close by, including a supermarket only a short walk away. We loved the location and the accommodation."

"The accommodation was really comfortable, a huge squashy leather settee and a leather rocker that we seriously wanted to bring home with us. The bed was comfortable too and the shower efficient. We cooked in every evening bar one and the kitchen had everything we needed. Haltwhistle itself is a charming little market town and we quickly found great walks for to go on with our dog."

"I can't recommend this little place enough. It's in a great spot in the middle of the town. A couple of good pubs close by, and a sainsburys within 2 mins walk. The owners very kindly left a bottle of wine and some chocolate which was a very nice touch. The apartment was immaculate and had everything needed for a short or long stay. We hope to return. ( ps there is a observatory close by that we didn't know about so it would be worthwhile booking that in advance as we couldn't get tickets when we turned up). "

"On arrival we were welcomed with a touching gift and thought the pictures didn't do the appartment Justice. On our first night we heard banging at the front door, upon opening it we discovered a drunk urinating and vomiting up the door and on the doorstep, not the greatest start. We gave the place the benefit of the doubt, but the final straw was a young couple having sex outside the bedroom window, while we were trying to sleep. Having stayed in Haltwhistle before I thought it would be an ideal place as it looked so nice, now I know why it looks nice the cons out way the pros sorry, I wasted a full weeks money on this cottage as we left early almost a week early and booked into a B&B in the end which is a disappointment as we enjoy our cottage breaks but this wasn't a break In short I wouldn't go back or recommend this place"

"This is a lovely place for a couple to stay. It makes a great base for a touring holiday in Northumberland. In walking distant of Hadrian's Wall. The inside is done to a very high standard and is comfortable. There's plenty of shops, cafes and pubs in the village. The only downside is that it's on a main road but that didn't detract from our enjoyment of our holiday in any way."

The flat is beautifully furnished and really comfortable with every possible amenity you could require. Really loved the sofa with the electrically operated footrest, great for relaxing after a long day out. The information provided by the owners on the locality is excellent. They have even returned, at no cost to ourselves, something that my wife left behind. Highly recommended for comfort and location"
