Reviews of Oughtershaw Hall

"Oughtershaw Hall is a great house to create memories to last a lifetime , the age and scale gives it the immediate impression of living in a grand old house in splendid isolation . On our arrival the scene was set by Ben he had the lights being on in every room, the fires all lit and a lovely Christmas tree to give the perfect start to our family holiday and the rest was down to us. We all loved living in the Yorkshire Dales for a week, which we imagined would seem a huge amount of time to occupy ourselves with 4 small children, but the time went so quickly it didn't seem long enough and we will certainly be back to do all the things we didn't manage to fit in. We loved the warm hospitality at the local pubs especially The George which was only 5 miles down the road, and The White Lion a similar distance. we spent a lot of time just enjoying the house and gardens with the beautiful walk along the beck. The pool housed in an old farm building is an example of how the house manages to keep its integrity whilst offering modern day facilities, likewise the old scullery which is now the laundry was an absolute treasure. We liked the house because, although the huge living kitchen was a great hub, there were several other rooms to retreat to for a bit of quiet time, each with a log fire and lots of comfy sofas . The well equipped kitchen was ideal for a family joint effort catering experience, which can be a challenge, but with the nearest shop being 6 miles away it was even more fun to see hoe inventive we could be on the non shopping days. Ilkley is about 45 minutes away and a lovely drive, the shops reflect the needs of people living in lovely country homes and dressing to suit. However the best bit of the day was arriving back at our holiday house and sitting in front of the fire with a glass of wine. One bit of advice it to allow plenty of time for your journey to the house as the road from Hawes or Ilkely is so beautiful you won't want to rush it and it takes longer than you expect, the drive is a bit tricky but the arrival is a moment you will never forget."

"Wow an outstanding property. Spent a week in Aug with extended family. 8 adults and 6 children aged between 11yrs and 6 weeks. Property had more than enough space for everyone to get together or have there own peace and quiet when needed. From the moment we arrived and were met by Ben who showed us round and explained all the necessaries to the moment we left a fab time was had by us all. The bedrooms were very large and beautifully decorated. The bathrooms were lovely either en-suite or separate and lovely roll top baths. Sheer luxury. Lounges a great place to relax and watch TV or a film or play games. Kitchen and dining room massive. We had some fabulous family meals. Games room also a great success. Boot room utility room also a spare room to dump extra beer wine toys etc. The sauna and pool were exceptional and used at least once a day sometimes 2 or 3 times. Outside a field to play football cricket or a family sports day. Loads of places to visit locally for days out. Supermarket home delivery a great idea (tesco sainsburys asda) all deliver. Remember everything as nearest shop is 6 miles away in Hawes. ENJOY"

"We've just arrived home after spending a fantastic week at Oughtershaw Hall. 14 guests consisted of 2 grandparents, 6 parents and 6 children ranging from 11 years to 6 weeks old! On arrival at the hall we were amazed at how beautiful the property was. We were lucky with the weather which enabled us to have lots of days out and come home to a swim in the indoor pool. The adults loved the luxury of having our own sauna and the kids loved having their own private pool for the week! Ben was on hand to check everything was ok and the highlight of the week for the 5 oldest children was being invited to his farm to have a ride in the tractor and on the quad bike and meet Daisy the puppy! It was a week of virtually no technology as no one had any signal on their phones but it was definitely a week of fun! Whilst we could have quite happily whiled away the days at the hall either in the pool or hosting our own sports day, we took advantage of the good weather and the local attractions, visiting Wensleydale creamery in Hawes, Aysgarth Falls and the Kettlewell scarecrow festival. Relaxing in the evening was surprisingly easy in the very comfortable sitting rooms. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook enough food for everyone and with all modern gadgets and 2 dishwashers keeping the kitchen clean was very easy to do! Considering there were 16 of us, you could quite easily walk around the house and get lost whilst looking for someone, which the children thought was great fun! If you are lucky enough to stay here, you definitely won't be disappointed. My 6 year old is already asking when we can visit the mansion again! "

"We were all thrilled and amazed by every aspect of the house and grounds as well as the constant support given by the owner. The pool was used at least once every day. It seemed that everything had been considered and catered for in advance. The surrounding countryside is also stunning with so many walking tracks and a gorgeous pub within walking distance."

"Wow, what a place. The photos on the website didn't do it justice. From the friendly welcome from Ben on arrival, the roaring fires that greeted us, the fabulous accommodation, the excellent swimming pool and the amazing location this place has it all. Yes it's in the middle of nowhere with no phone signal, but that's part of the attraction. We had a fantastic week, making as much noise as we liked while playing family games to the small hours, enjoying swimming at midnight, discovering it was further to walk to the pub than we thought and a trip to see the lambs at Bens farm. If you're looking for somewhere special Oughtershaw Hall is the place to go. A brilliant family week, thanks to Ben and the Sykes team for making it so special."

"The grounds of the property were wonderful to explore, whatever the weather. The property itself was outstanding and it was wonderful for the family to spread out for individual time and also to get together as a whole group. It was brilliant to have the swimming pool and sauna for those 'not so dry' days! We loved playing games in front of the open fire in what became our 'family games room.' It was great too for the 'boys' to watch the footie in one room, for the 'girls' to chill and watch a film in another room and for granddad to watch his TV programmes in his snug! We loved our time at Oughtershaw Hall."

"We enjoyed a brilliant Christmas with family at the house. It is a stunning location and the house is like something out of a movie. The decor is excellent, luxurious and wonderfully clean. I must also mention every bed in the house was very comfortable, which is a great bonus on holiday. The children enjoyed the days in the swimming pool and the adults enjoyed the evenings in the main lounge area in front of an open fire, which was a wonder! We would especially like to mention Ben the local rep who really went above and beyond during our stay. We took a trip to his local farm and he allowed the children to feed the animals. It was a real highlight for them and one they won't forget. An overall unforgettable trip. Thanks Sykes!"

"We stayed recently with extended family. The house has just been released as a holiday house and it's absolutely wonderful. Every room has been beautifully decorated and expensively furnished with gorgeous furniture and beautiful artwork. The kitchen and eating area is huge and there is a massive island for socialising at. The en suite bathrooms are very luxurious. The on site swimming pool is a wonderful bonus. Many of the rooms overlook a beautiful river and waterfalls. There are many lovely walks from the front door. There are three lovely lounges and excellent wifi. Our children loved the basement games room which was well equipped with a great range of games. To be honest we just couldn't fault this lovely house. It really is very special and we feel so delighted to have been one of the first families to use it. If you can afford it book it. You won't be disappointed!"
