Reviews of Gardale House

"What can I say: an amazing location - very quiet with beautiful views; a very spacious, well-equipped and beautifully furnished home - perfect for both adults and children. The tall cupboard in the playroom is full of toys/books & games for children of all ages. The bookcase in the lounge has a variety of novels, local maps & walks. We stayed with 3 generations to celebrate 2 special birthdays; everyone thought it was a perfect setting. Thank you to the owner for providing a lovely hamper and making us feel so welcome."

The kitchen is fully equipped and the views are just incredible. We will be re-booking soon for a Christmas break. "On our arrival we were met by Julia the owner who showed us everything we needed to know along with a lovely welcome hamper which was much appreciated. We found the house to be an excellent size and more than big enough for the 9 of us staying (6 adults and 3 children) The kitchen has everything you need and more and the games room is enjoyable for all ages (we had ages 2-64) The dining table fits everyone around easily for dinner or games. The family bedroom is huge (3 single beds) and great for the children to play in. The master bedroom with walk in wardrobe and en suite is beautiful, the other 2 doubles are of standard size with a small twin too. The garden is a great size for the children to play on, unfortunately the weather was awful for our stay so didn't get to use the play equipment or the sand pit but I can imagine it been lovely in spring/summer! The use of 2 fridges Definately helps with so many people arriving for a week with a freezer too. Lots of cupboard space in the kitchen and wardrobe space in the bedrooms. We took a number of games to play but the house already has lots in there for you to borrow along with books and DVDs. The local village (long Preston) is about 2 miles away (not really walkable with small children) has a small post office with a really well stocked food store if you run out of anything! Skipton was only about a 30 min drive and settle about 15 mins. We would highly recommend not only the house but the service received by Julia and her family."

"First of all, let me say that the only reason that I haven't given five stars is no reflection on the location, the facilities or the service - all of which were excellent. The reasons for a four star rating were due mainly to 'circumstances' - however I feel that they warrant inclusion as part of any decision by future guests to stay - and a true review of the week. The property itself is stunning - 11 of us came to stay for a week and found everything to be high quality - there is so much space, with sufficient seating for everyone in the lounge, at the dining table and the outside table - and with enough crockery and cutlery to serve a cruise liner! Although we didn't always do everything together or dine together - there was certainly the facility to do so if we'd wished. There are three different showers - all of which seemed to be able to be on at the same time - as well as the massive dishwasher!! We did lose hot water one evening - but the owner was straight out and fixed the problem (no pressure in the system) - allowing us all to still have time to shower and change for our respective evenings out. There is ample parking for probably ten cars and the garden area is perfectly appointed and well kept - as well as being south facing! We made use of the excellent BBQ facilities twice and the garden was the focal point of our week - particularly when the owners allowed us 9 additional visitors to the house for the day on the Saturday for a 70th birthday party. There are plenty of amenities within 15 minutes - including several pubs, a fish n chip shop, and supermarkets a little further afield in Settle and Gargrave. My only circumstantial 'negative' comments are as follows: As mentioned in previous posts the adjacent field is accessible to a flock of sheep. During our stay the sheep were not present during the afternoon and evening times but would reappear in the middle of the night and begin bleating in unison from approximately 3am to 6am - every morning unfortunately. These movements may have been due to the lambing season, or the unseasonably hot weather, but we all had to admit to having our nights sleep disturbed every early morning by the sheep. Also, as mentioned in other posts - and previously by myself - we did have a water issue one evening - although this was rectified swiftly. Unfortunately, we also had the owner out another night as the smoke alarm 'low battery' alert went off twice at 3am and 4.30am - again waking us all up. My only other note for prospective guests - particularly families - is that we found it very difficult to have separate schedules and sleep cycles due to the building itself. What I mean is, we ended up pretty much all getting up together on a morning and going to bed at the same time at night. The building is designed with a mezzanine walkway at first floor level which meant - as we discovered the first night - that those of us who wanted to stay up later in the evening to play games, watch tv and generally chit-chat - were unable to do so without disturbing those who had already gone to bed - as the noise travelled directly upstairs via the mezzanine and into the bedrooms. Furthermore, the mezzanine floor itself and first floor doors, albeit rustic and in keeping with a barn conversion - all creaked and groaned whenever in use - particularly the floor boards. This, again, meant that anyone up earlier, or retiring later, invariably disturbed those adjacent to them as they walked up to bed, or to the bathroom. We stayed with three generations of guests - including a ten month baby - who, as you would expect, would have liked to have had different routines for rising, sleeping, showering etc. However, this proved nigh on impossible without disturbing others. Our resolution was to all get up and go to bed at the same time - which worked for us - but may not for others. All in all we have had a lovely week and, sleep disturbance aside, can not fault Gardale House at all - it really is beautiful in every respect - and would recommend it as a Dales 'get away from it all' holiday. My theory is that most people only write Trip Advisor reviews when they've had a terrible time or an amazing time. I try to write a review every time I go anywhere - and I type it as I see it."

"We have spent the most wonderful time in this home. It is perfectly located, country retreat as described. Since our return we have once again reviewed the feedback of others before writing our own and I have to say, the recent one negative feedback can only be highlighted by "those with a hangover" in the review.......clearly whoever wrote the feedback was still hungover!! This is a beautiful converted barn, perfect for family reunions, rural breaks, friends and family, people who appreciate the countryside and remoteness. The house is so warm and comfortable. The decor and furnishings are tastefully done and the whole place has a homely feel about it. Even though it was April, we wanted to be snugly so a fire was ideal and there was plenty of kindling and wood for this.......The sheep never once bothered us as they along with the cows are within their enclosed boundaries...!! Settle is the nearest town and this is only 7 miles away, a 10 minute drive, offering typical Yorkshire experiences....being a Southerner this is what we wanted. This is not the type of place you call out for a delivery, the fantastic kitchen is a place to cook a homemade meal, especially a lovely Sunday Roast. The house was immaculate, faultless in fact. There was even fresh flowers and biscuits as a little touch....... There was constant hot water so no problem with the heating and water system.......I don't know many places where you can look out of the barn style windows and really appreciate the North.........We will definately be booking and returning.....The owner who met us couldn't have done anymore for us, she was so accommodating and her efforts really showed in making our visit memorable, thank you........we'll be back :)"

"Gardale House is a wonderful place to stay with loads of space. The house is huge, much bigger than the photos indicate. It was very clean and the beds are amazingly comfy. The kitchen is well fitted out with all the equipment that is needed for a week's stay. Our party consisted of four children, five and under so the totally enclosed large garden was a treat for them. They all loved the Wendy House! Also inside are toys, games, books etc. If you have young children, take their bikes as the tarmaced area is a great place to ride up and down and learn to ride without stabilisers. I would also like to refute the claims made by the reviewer below apart from the fact that the property location: which is rural as stated in the particulars and just what we wanted. Yes, very tranquil and with an endless supply of hot water even in the evening! All ten of us had a fab holiday The review below"

"Where do I start? House was already in bit its when we arrived, we discovered this further on during the week. Might I add the house is in the middle of nowhere, nearest town's a good thirty minute drive away which we, as a group, had to make atleast three/four times. The constant threat of sheep invading is another controversial factor that has led to this review. We, as a group, had to keep watch constantly for the surrounding sheep that you're practically caged in with. Whether you want to go for a walk, drive out of the property and litterarly sit in the back garden; sheep constantly wasp you. Good things about the property? The wifi. Even though it could only handle one person watching a Facebook video at a time; between a group of ten. It got the job done. I must point out that it's pretty hard juggling rotations for WiFi usage. Back to the negatives, I'll try ring this off quickly. We were without hot water past 9pm most nights. For someone who prefers a late night bath before going to his bed. This was a real pain. There was a fire place in the property but guess what? No kindle for the fire. Three requests were made to the owner who done nothing to change our suffering. The heating inside the property is slyly turned off by the owner's step father who lives right next door to this property. He watches you like a hermit from the hill opposite the property. I lost count of how many times we were resting in the living room and one of us clocked several passersby staring at us through the window and observing our daily activities. This was worrying and severely annoying. We were constantly woken up during the early hours of the morning by Jamie Reid's Uncle who, for some unknown reason, enjoys using a Chainsaw at half 7 in the morning. For people who were suffering with hangovers most morning, this did not help one bit. Another thing we weren't going to mention it but one of the thousands of sheep besieging the property damaged one of our five cars leaving a costly dent on the passenger side door. We were promised nearby Chinese cuisine. Another lie. Turns out they didn't deliver which was another thirty minute drive there and back for a below average Chinese takeaway. Who, by the way, got our order completely wrong that left one of our party to eat oven chips while the rest of us feasted on stale Uncle Ben's rice. Like I said before, I would of preferred a portion ae the beans and rice ye get in im a celebrity get me out of here. For the price we paid, we should of been eating like kings for a week. Overall, I wouldn't go back here if you paid me the whole week for me, gave me a weeks shopping and drove me there and back. Terrible experience. Dodge this place like the plague, do yourself a favour. TD;DR; terrible week. Had to live in constant freezing temperatures due to the sly step father. The beach isn't on the door step, it's a metre wide stream of water. Not St Andrews."

The garden is extensive with lots of entertainment for young kinds, the downstairs living area is massive and it is an ideal destination for groups who want to go walking in the dales or even have a BBQ with a few beers/glasses of wine. 2 very large bedrooms, 2 decent bedrooms and a smaller room that still easily fits 2. The only surprise about this trip was the price,.... We have rented cottages in the past and paid a lot more for poorer accommodation. 10/10 in terms of value for money and we would definitely recommend others should stay there.
